I asked ChatGPT and it built me a product instead of fixing the problem
operator stories
I pasted a complaint about invoices and it handed me a spec for an invoice management platform. Modules. Roles. A dashboard. I did not have a company. I had a Friday.
This is the default now. You can do it in Claude and Grok too. You type a mess. You get a product. It feels like progress because there are bullet points. Your PDFs are still in the downloads folder.
I still do this when I am avoiding the files.
Paste the actual file and ask for the next step
Not "help me with invoices." Three PDFs, or four ugly rows, or the email thread. Then: what would you change in this sheet so I am not typing the date. If you do not give it the thing, it will invent a category. Categories are how you get a platform.
I dropped a CSV in and said the date column is text, I need a real date, do not add columns. It told me how to use DATEVALUE. That was a next step. The platform pitch was not.
A next step is something you can do before lunch. If the answer has a sitemap, you asked the wrong question, or you asked it with no file.
Ask for a procedure, not a product
Write the steps I do on Friday. Numbered, short, using the programs I named. No new logos. If it starts naming a stack you do not have, stop it. I have started typing "do not suggest software I did not mention" at the top of chats because I am tired of being sold Notion by a paragraph.
I did this with a quote PDF I was turning into a bid. I asked it to make a bid sheet. It made a template with columns I dont use. Second try I pasted the quote text and said only the line items, keep my labor row. That one I could use.
A procedure you can do this afternoon is the fix. A product is a delay that sounds like a plan.
Take the same sentence to a person who has done the job
A bookkeeper, a shop manager, a thread where someone already fought QuickBooks. Same sentence you should have given the chatbot: the login returns 401, the PDF stack is forty, the front desk cannot take a card. People who have done the job will not design you a platform. They will say we use the Square export and we hate it and here is the mapping.
I posted a problem like that and got two tries I could click. One was a sheet. One was a small page. Neither was a dashboard. I used the sheet.
If the chatbot keeps handing you a product, that is usually because you handed it a vibe. Put a file in. Ask what to do in the next twenty minutes. If it cannot, the chat is not the right room for this one.
The Friday PDF stack is the try here if you want something you can click instead of another dashboard spec.
